If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country traveling to Europe, you will soon need prior authorization to enter the Schengen Area. This requirement is called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), a new regulation set to take effect in mid-2025. Its purpose is to enhance security and immigration control within the European Union.

What is ETIAS, and why is it important?
ETIAS is not a visa but an electronic travel authorization that citizens from over 60 visa-exempt countries (such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile, the United States, or Canada) must obtain before traveling to the EU. This permit allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
How to apply for ETIAS?
The process is simple and 100% online:
✅ Fill out a form with personal and travel information.
✅ Have a valid passport.
✅ Pay the required fee (approximately €7).
✅ Receive approval, which, in most cases, will be automatic and granted within minutes.
When does it take effect, and how long does it last?
ETIAS will become mandatory starting in 2025 and will be valid for three years or until the passport expires. With a single approval, you can enter Europe multiple times without needing to renew it for each trip.
